KILKENNY CBS 2-10
GOOD COUNSEL COLLEGE NEW ROSS 0-10
CONOR Drennan was the hero for Kilkenny CBS as his marksmanship was crucial in deciding a hard fought Top Oil Leinster Schools Senior A hurling championship semi-final in Thomastown on Wednesday afternoon.
With the match proving a real nip-tuck affair and with Kilkenny struggling for consistency on placed balls, CBS moved Drennan onto the free taking responsibility at a crucial stage in the second half.
He duly delivered and landed three pressure frees – as well as the clinching 55th minute goal which finally broke the resistance of a gallant Good Counsel side.
The excellent sweeper Sam Wall and the sharp shooting of Luke Synnott had been key for the Wexford school up to this point.
Good Counsel had raced into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead thanks largely to Synnott who finished with 0-9 of their total – with 0-8 from placed balls.
CBS recovered when Sean Bolger crashed in a goal on 14 minutes to level but the sides were still level 0-6 to 1-3 at the interval.
Despite heavy conditions the teams continued to battle bravely.
Good Counsel kept the pressure on and moved in front in the third quarter but the reshuffle in the CBS ranks was pivotal and they had the class when they required a kick for home.
The result gives us a familiar and some might say expected showdown on the weekend after next.
Kilkenny CBS will play reigning Leinster and All-Ireland champions St Kieran’s College at Nowlan Park with exact match date and throw in times to be confirmed.
